Description
***WARNING: MAJOR spoilers from "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak:
"...In October 1945, a man with swampy eyes, feathers of hair, and a clean shaven face walked into the shop...'Is there someone here by the name of Liesel Meminger?'...Liesel came out. They hugged and cried and fell to the floor."- The Book Thief, page 548
I nearly screamed when I read this page. Of all the characters to survive the war, Max Vandenburg did. Wow. I couldn't believe it, thinking he was a goner once the Nazis caught him. It just reminds me that some people DID survive the Holocaust. I find that remarkable, because I don't think I could be that strong.
I don't think my eyes were dry from page 507 on. Not that I'd not cried through most of the book. It was the most powerfully written story I've read in a very long time, and the book currently remains at the very top of my favorites list. So many amazing images I've yet to draw out...
***
I'm actually not entirely pleased with this sketch. I did it entirely without reference as there were no references of any sort to be found, so forgive me if the clothing isn't accurate, or the angles. And I guess it's also pretty obvious I had the world's crappiest eraser and a rather contrary pencil. lol And I know Liesel's foot gets cut off in the picture, that was the scanner's fault.
